Lampung Abung in Indonesia

Lampung Abung in Indonesia
The Lampung Abung people are known as mountain dwellers, and have a unique history as headhunters. The majority make their living as rice farmers. After they harvest the rice, the best fields are then used to plant pepper. The other important source of livelihood for the Lampung Abung is fishing. The Lampung Abung live in traditional communities known as tiuh, in which each clan has its own permanent house. Currently, every Lampung Abung is theoretically a Muslim. However, the Lampung Abung also have strong beliefs in spirits. They often call a dukun (shaman/healer/occultist) to heal the sick or cast out demons.
Ministry Obstacles
The island of Sumatra does not provide ready access to Christian workers.
Outreach Ideas
Christians need to find ways to minister to the physical and material needs of the people, and in the process, share what they know about the goodness of Christ.
Pray for the followers of Christ
There are few if any followers of Jesus Christ among the Lampung Abung. Pray the Lord will be calling many of these people to a personal relationship with himself, and will build a holy church among them, zealous to honor him with their lives.
Pray for the entire people group
The main need of the Lampung Abung is improved farm management, especially with the goal of raising more export-quality pepper. Pray for an improving standard of living, with employment opportunities for all who need employment.
Scripture Focus
"Do you not say, 'There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest?' Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest." John 4:35
